Well.. You need to start searching for a place to stay in probably 2 months before you come.
Use these websites to rent an apartment and buy used furniture
http://montreal.kijiji.ca
http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca
http://www.lespac.com
http://www.canadarentals.net/city-view.cfm?CityID=1673
http://quebec.rent-index.com/
http://www.viviun.com
Most of the contract you will find are annual contracts so you will be committed to stay in it for a year.
Also it might be difficult to get it online before you are here because you are new immigrant and for land lord, this means that you are not stable, don’t have work and may have troubles. And these reasons are enough for him to say no, I search for somebody else.
The best thing you do is to search for a vacation rent/ temporary stay for a month or something.
In that case open the vacation rental, short terms sections in these websites…
If you are here in Montreal and search for an apartment:
You will still use these sites above to search plus
Metro journal (You find it in metro stations)
Voir journal-free journal with apartment ads on Thursdays only (your find it in metro stations)
Journal de Montreal (Wednesdays are full of ads)
When you find an apartment, make sure to take a resident of Montreal with you to see the apartment before you sign the contract. This is because of two reasons:
1- The land lord will feel safe if you have somebody with you
2- This person will have some experience to give you his/her opinion, check the problems and tell you if this is a good place to stay in or not.
And if you know nobody… You can always send me .. I will try to help
